A and P - what does that stand for?

Tomorrow we are going the the annual A and P Show in Christchurch

What does A and P stand for?

Your challenge...

Find the web site and... (how am I going to do that?)

To help you plan ahead for a fun day investigate what attractions are on tomorrow at the A and P show.

You don't want to miss out on something that you'd like to see.

Look under visitor information

Look for a map of the show grounds - in your journal draw 5 or 6 things that you'd like to see or do

Find a link to the official guide and discover all the things that are on.  Remember to look at the times and dates of each event - make a note in your journal of the ones you want to see and the time they are on. Check on the map so that you know where different events are happening.

Short Film

Respond to this short film

Describe what happens and what you notice in your own words.
Back legs apart and front legs slightly arched, a group of giraffes take turns diving into an Olympic-sized swimming pool.
PROMPTS
Think of an interesting Title for your story - write some notes as soon as you have watched the film.
What - is happening?
When -  does this take place?
How - did the giraffes get into the pool?
Why - do they do this?
Who - knows about this? who let them in?
Describe - show not tell this short story like you have been hiding somewhere under a seat or around a corner so that the giraffes can't see you.
Describe: sounds, movement, body positions, texture, size, number, feelings and thoughts

Fun with Tessellation

A tessellation is part of geometry.  You can identify a tessellation when you see a shape that can be neatly fitted together again and again with no gaps.

To see how to make your own tessellations
take a look at this video.

Once you start looking you can find lots of examples of tessellations in the world around you: buildings, machines, toys and natural objects.  Many amazing tessellations are made by nature!

Here are some more ideas created by another group of children for you to look at.
These have been created by starting from a square piece of card.

Try a google image search for yourself to see what you can find.  Copy any of these search ideas and paste them into the search bar to discover amazing images:

  • natural patterns
  • patterns in nature
  • shell patterns
  • camouflage patterns

  • coral patterns
  • spider patterns

Monday Writing

Imagination

Time to Write
Time to use your imagination.

Inside your head you can imagine it?

Take a look at these images
Which one gives you the best idea for a story?
What ideas are starting to form in your head?

Use a page in your writing book to:
Plan your ideas - in words and pictures
Draft your story - write on every other line - circle spellings to check later

Accident?
Was he pushed!
Did he intend to go in the mud?
Does this remind you of something that has happened to you?

Why are there so many bananas in this van?
Have the minions been here?
How did all these bananas get here?
Write the story...

Powerful Memories

Take a snapshot in your mind of a strong  memory that you have.

Something fun, an activity you really like, a personal challenge or first time experience.

Hold this picture in your mind.
Use the best describing words you can to retell this memory so that it will burst into colour in the mind of the person that reads it

Example Story

Going Down the Steep Hill!

Blood pulsing at break neck speed. Feeling nervous. I edged slowly down the steep winding road.  My only life line, a single rope tied to the branch of a tree. I looked down. I was dizzlingly high up, I felt sick.

I couldn't  move, I was scared stiff. Then suddenly the sand under my feet started to shift, I was slipping!!!

regained my balance, but I still felt petrified. Then I noticed people shouting behind me. Someone shouted, “hurry up!” For a moment I felt infuriated thinking, "they have no idea what it’s like being terrified of heights!"

I saw the beach just in front of me. I thought to myself, “you can do it - almost there.” When I finally got down I felt proud, relived
and I
couldn't
believe what I had just
done.

Thanks to a previous Ilam school writer...
