Human Statistics

Here is a way to do statistics - run around - and make a movie at the same time.

We made a set of different lines - like bar graphs - to show some information about our class.

Graphs
Boys vs Girls
Eye Colour: Brown, Blue, Green (other)
Hair Colour: Black, Brown, Blond and Red

By moving around this activity is more memorable and fun.
At the end we made a Human Pie Chart showing class Hair Colour then wriggled away like caterpillars!

If you watch closely you should be able to spot which graph is which?

Can you make a statement about the information these human graphs show?

Here are some photographs of the graphs to help you visualize what we are trying to show.

Investigate and Check

Be a Detective

Take a look at our class measurement results with a buddy.

Find the largest and the smallest measurement in each column.

Think as you look through the results...

  • Do all the numbers seem correct?
  • Are there any mistakes here?
  • Use a highlighter to show any of the numbers that you think need to be checked or re-measured.
Why do you think that?
Why do you think that this measurement is a mistake?

My Measurements

Go to the online form and use the results from your measurement sheet to complete the form.

When all the results have been entered check out this link
Who is the tallest?   Who has the largest smile?
Class Measurements Results

Then collect a graph outline and use your measurements to create a bar graph of your results.

Example Bar Graph
Remember: Clear title, scale and axis labels, use rulers, use colour,

When you have finished your graph look carefully at the results - compare your measurements and make some statements about what you notice.

Graphing Checklist - Have you got?

  • Clear Title that says what the graph is showing
  • Label the axis down the side and along the bottom
  • Clearly and accurately colour the bars to show the results
  • Add data labels at the top of each bar eg. 7 cm
